Adding x86 Printers to x64 Print Servers

We're creating a new 64 bit Server 2008R2 print server. It needs to server 64 bit and 32 bit drivers for all our network printers.

Two problems have occurred during the process.

  1. Some older printers don't have matching drivers. A good example is the Konica Minolta 2300DL which has both 64 bit and 32 bit drivers, but they don't have the same name or version number, so the server won't accept them as a pair. To deal with this, install the 64 bit driver and test it. Now open the .inf file in the 32 bit version and go to the "strings" section. Replace the PrinterName strings with the ones from the 64bit inf. Do the same with the Version. This won't work unless the 2 drivers have identical features.
  2. Host based printers have trouble when using 32 bit drivers. These are cheap printers which don't have proper PCL built in, and use the CPU on the PC to do the processing instead. HP tech say that such printers can't be used on network servers, but there is a way. In Server 2008R2 there is an "Internet Printing" role which you can install. Do this and then on your 32 bit client browse to the print server using IE, but use the FULL dns name (eg http://printers.yourorg.com/printers rather than just http://printers/printers). Now use the Connect option in the web interface and you'll get a web connection to the printer. It works even on 32 bit clients.
  3. If you have found a 32 bit driver but it won't install (it gives you a second browse box looking for ntprint.ini) you need to install a copy of the 32 bit print driver on a 32 bit Server 2008, Vista or Windows 7. Then go to c:\windows\system32\DriverStore\FileRepository and find the newest ntprint.ini folder. Copy the folder to where you have the driver files on the print server and then you can point the second browse box to the ntprint.ini within that folder
